Recent Trends in Capacity Utilisation and Production Output in Zhejiang's Ladder Industry
Zhejiang Province has recently become a major centre for ladder manufacturing in China. As a leading region for ladder production, Zhejiang has experienced significant changes in capacity utilisation rates and production output. This article provides an overview of these trends, highlighting the factors influencing the industry's development and future outlook.
Capacity utilisation trends
Capacity utilisation rate reflects how effectively an industry is using its installed production capabilities. In Zhejiang's ladder industry, capacity utilisation has fluctuated noticeably in recent years. Following a period of relatively stable growth prior to 2018, the rate peaked as many manufacturers optimised their operations to meet rising domestic and international demand.
From 2018 to 2020, capacity utilisation in Zhejiang's ladder manufacturing firms remained at around 80–85%, indicating a healthy balance between demand and supply. However, the onset of the 2020–22 global pandemic caused a short-term dip in capacity utilisation due to supply chain and workforce disruptions. Despite these challenges, many companies adapted by implementing lean manufacturing techniques and improving automation, helping the utilisation rate to recover to pre-pandemic levels by late 2021.
In 2022 and 2023, capacity utilisation rates fluctuated between 78% and 83%. This slight variability reflects shifting market conditions, such as changes in export demand, pressure on raw material costs, and intermittent logistical constraints. Nevertheless, the overall trend indicates a resilient industry maintaining near-optimal capacity usage.
Production output changes
In line with capacity utilisation trends, Zhejiang's ladder production output has also undergone significant changes. The province's ladder manufacturing industry produces a wide range of products, including aluminium, fibreglass and wooden ladders, for both domestic construction markets and international buyers.
Between 2017 and 2019, production output grew steadily at an average annual rate of 6–8%, fuelled by increasing infrastructure investment in China and growing exports to Southeast Asia, Europe and North America. By the end of 2019, output volumes had reached historic highs, driven by increased demand for affordable, high-quality ladders.
However, the pandemic in 2020 caused a temporary slowdown, with output declining by around 5–7% as factories closed temporarily or operated at reduced capacity. However, demand quickly rebounded in the latter half of 2020 and into 2021, spurring production to recover and even surpass previous levels. From 2022 to early 2023, output growth stabilised at an annual rate of 3–5%, reflecting a maturing market returning to normalised growth patterns.
Driving factors and future outlook
Several key factors have influenced these trends. The industry's ability to adapt quickly to pandemic-related disruptions has been crucial. Investments in modernisation, such as smart manufacturing technologies and enhanced supply chain management, have increased capacity utilisation and improved production efficiency.
Additionally, the adoption of higher environmental and safety standards worldwide has encouraged Zhejiang manufacturers to innovate and diversify their product range, thereby supporting steady output growth. The province's robust export infrastructure and strategic location also contribute to the industry's competitiveness.
Looking ahead, Zhejiang's ladder industry is expected to increase its capacity utilisation rates gradually towards 85–90% as demand stabilises and production efficiency improves. Meanwhile, production output is expected to continue growing at a moderate rate, driven by ongoing urbanisation, renovation projects and expanding international markets.
In conclusion, Zhejiang's ladder industry has demonstrated resilience and adaptability in recent years. Despite short-term disruptions due to global uncertainties, capacity utilisation rates have remained relatively high and production output has grown healthily. With continued innovation and market expansion, Zhejiang is well-positioned to maintain its leading role in China's ladder manufacturing sector.
